FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

What is a Forensic SATA/IDE Bridge Write Blocker?
A forensic SATA/IDE bridge write blocker is a hardware device that allows investigators to connect both older IDE (PATA) and modern SATA hard drives to a workstation without altering any data. The Tableau TK35u is the industry-standard bridge for this purpose.
No. While the TK35u supports both drive types, it is designed to image one drive at a time to ensure maximum data integrity and power stability during the forensic acquisition process.
Yes. The TK35u kit typically includes the necessary adapters (such as the TDA5-25) to connect smaller 2.5-inch notebook IDE drives directly to the write blocker.
The TK35u utilizes a USB 3.0 interface to the host computer, supporting high- speed data transfer. Real-world speeds often exceed 200 MB/s, though actual performance depends on the health and age of the source SATA or IDE media.
Yes. Even with legacy IDE drives, modern operating systems can write hidden metadata or “trash” files the moment a drive is connected. Using a hardware write blocker like the TK35u is the only way to ensure the evidence remains forensically sound and admissible in court.
The kit is a comprehensive solution including the TK35u bridge, a dedicated power supply, a USB 3.0 host cable, SATA and IDE signal cables, and drive power cables, all usually housed in a ruggedized carrying case.
