A Deserving Cause: The Winner’s Need for TALINO

Greene County Sheriff’s Department
WINNER

Greene County Sheriff’s Office

The Greene County Sheriff’s Department is making strides in modernizing its operations to better serve the community, addressing challenges from the past. The Digital Forensics Unit, which previously handled 20-30 device extractions annually, has already processed 61 devices since achieving certification in mid-2024.

Efforts are underway to upgrade software for securely storing sensitive data, particularly juvenile cases that cannot use cloud storage. With devices now holding up to 500GB of data, the department’s current computers struggle to process and analyze extractions efficiently. Upgraded technology would greatly enhance their ability to manage cases and support the community effectively.

Berkeley County Sheriff's Office
1ST RUNNER UP

Berkeley County Sheriff's Office

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office (“BCSO”) serves one of the fastest-growing regions in the U.S., facing challenges brought on by rapid population growth, limited resources, and a finite budget. The Digital Forensic Unit, staffed by a single examiner, has seen a dramatic increase in workload—from processing 179 devices in 2002 to 298 as of November 2024.
Despite their dedication, the unit operates in a cramped space with outdated equipment nearly a decade old, struggling to handle the demands of modern digital forensics. Larger devices with more storage require more time and resources, forcing the examiner to work long hours and transfer files across computers to complete tasks.

Providing BCSO’s Digital Forensic Unit with updated technology and a workstation that exceeds minimum forensic standards would be transformative, enabling them to meet growing demands and better serve their community.
